Due to an increased need for space, a new building with an adjoining sports hall was planned for the Märkische Schule in Bochum. The building extends over three storeys and houses a kitchen with canteen, school rooms and a gymnastics room. On the first floor, the load-bearing exterior façade is almost completely broken up into columns, which are arranged in a narrow grid and give the building its characteristic appearance. The basement houses the two-storey sports hall and associated ancillary rooms. Various options were investigated for the folded roof construction. In compliance with the design specifications, a "rafter roof" emerged as the most economical solution. The hip rafters were designed as steel girders in the kinks of the wide-span roof in order to minimize the overall height of the structure and thus enable unrestricted use of the premises.
The ceiling above the first floor spans the building area including the sports hall. This is made possible by the design of the walls on the upper floor as wall-like beams. These load-bearing elements with a center-to-center distance of around 7.50 m span the entire 1250 m² (45.3 m x 27.6 m) area of the sports hall and serve as supports for the ceiling slab. The resulting spaces between the wall-like beams house the technical areas as well as the gymnastics and weight room. In this way, the construction, which is necessary for the column-free supporting structure of the sports hall, can be optimally utilized in terms of space.
