Pedestrian bridge Stuttgart

Foot and cycle path bridge in Stuttgart Dürrlewang
  • AWARD AT THE ENGINEERING PRIZE OF THE GERMAN STEEL CONSTRUCTION, CATEGORY BRIDGES 2015

The pedestrian and cycle bridge in the Stuttgart district of Dürrlewang connects two hiking trails over a railway line. The bridge superstructure was designed in steel construction and consists of a paving slab with edge caps on both sides and a hull with a variable triangular cross-section, which opens out into a crossbeam above each of the two supports. The paving slab and the two support cross beams are designed as multicellular welded hollow boxes. The shape of the bridge, designed as a single-span beam, is derived from the line of moments: The maximum section height is reached in the middle of the bridge and decreases towards the supports. The difference in height between the two supports is absorbed on the walkway level by an opposite curvature of the gradient, while the lower part of the structure has straight edges. The underside of the hull can therefore be made of flat sheets which are welded to the hollow box section via transverse bulkheads. The contact protection above the tracks, necessary for safety reasons, follows the elegant curve of the bridge and was designed as a design element in the form of glass wings.
