Large-format facade glass with logo

London

The new PUMA flagship store in downtown London was constructed with a high-quality all-glass facade, which—thanks to its staggered layout—could be built without an additional substructure. The facade spans up to 10.5 m vertically and, with a total length of approximately 26.5 m, consists of only 10 insulated glass units. In the inwardly offset entrance areas, the door openings were made possible by surrounding (stainless) steel frames, which also serve as supports for the glass panels above and contribute to the overall load transfer.

The load-bearing glass panels are designed as insulated glass units with an asymmetrical glass structure consisting of an outer layer of laminated safety glass (VSG) made of 5x10mm tempered glass (TVG) and an inner layer of laminated safety glass (VSG) made of 2x10mm tempered glass (TVG) panels, with the laminated effect ensured by SG films. The individual panes are bonded together using DC993, resulting in a staggered joint geometry at the vertical corner joints due to the stepped arrangement of the individual glass panes. At the top, the glass elements were framed with a perimeter steel frame and connected horizontally to the existing structural framework.

For the suspended PUMA logo, fittings were laminated into two panes of insulated glass to form the support points. The aluminum support structure of the logo follows the logo’s outline and is not visible from the outside.

In addition, a cantilevered steel-and-aluminum canopy was installed above the facade, extending down to the ground on the sides and thus forming a surrounding frame for the facade.

The design, fabrication, and installation of the facade were awarded to seele (UK) Ltd., a company of the seele Group. seele commissioned Engelsmann Peters Consulting Engineers to handle the structural engineering work for the project during the planning and construction phases. Working in close collaboration, the team optimized the structural design, developed connection points and details, and provided all the structural verification required for construction.
